Egyptian officials and investors on Monday started meetings with officials in the Iraqi Kurdistan region to discuss investment opportunities in northern Iraq and means to benefit from the Egyptian expertise to develop the region.

“The Egyptian delegation’s visit came after two Egyptian consulates were inaugurated in Arbil and Basra to expand cooperation, in addition to our interest to have presence in the Iraqi Kurdistan region,” Egyptian Assistant Minister Ibrahim al-Ashmawi said in statements during a meeting held by the Egyptian delegation with a number of officials in the region on Monday.

The Egyptian 50-businessman delegation represents major companies in the fields of construction, tourism, infrastructure, health, pharmaceuticals, food industries and trade.

“The Egyptian delegation will meet later with the Iraqi Kurdistan region’s President Massoud Barazani and Prime Minister Burham Saleh to discuss investment opportunities in the region,” Ashmawi added.

For his part, Egyptian Assistant Foreign Minister Muhammad Qassem told Aswat al-Iraq that the visit was paid because the Egyptians consider Kurdistan as a promising chance for a strong and effective Egyptian presence.
