Shibibi refuses charges against him

13 Nov 2012
Sinan al-Shibibi, the ex-governor of Iraq denied charges of corruption against him Saturday. He said that he was the victim of a government campaign whose motto was to control central bank’s foreign reserves. Iraq's cabinet fired him last month after an investigation into central bank. Other officials also accused of abusing the bank’s dollar auction, report says. When Shibibi came to know that arrest warrants has been issued for him and other bank officials, he left Iraq, and other bank officials. Investors are in tough situation for Prime Minister Nurial-Maliki’s interfere with the bank’s autonomy. "I think the main problem was that the central bank did not fund the government because the law does not allow it", Shibibi told reporters from Geneva. "The accusations and criticism ... are unjust and incomprehensible." It is still in suspense whether Shibibi will return to the country to face the charges against him or not. His charges are now investigated by independent team. The corruption charges against central bank’s officials are the latest news in a long-running dispute between the government, lawmakers and the central bank over the bank’s autonomy. A parliamentary commission last week accused bank. They claimed, bank had violated rules on dollar auction. Central bank and other independent bodies are under more cabinet supervision from this year because Maliki won a court ruling last year. Opponents are trying to attack the government. Iraq is in big political problem among Shi'ite, Sunni Muslim and ethnic Kurdish blocks, some of whom accuse Maliki. They blame Maliki of failing to properly fulfil power sharing agreement with others. Corruption is rising in Iraq as the country is developing its oilfield and foreign investors investing for reconstruct Iraq’s infrastructure and battered economy after wars. Source: [Reuters]
