It is expected that the Syrian and Iraqi governments will decide on the debt owed to Syrian merchants on Iraq, which is a permanent item in the talks the two sides over the past years. That is why an Iraqi delegation headed by Deputy Secretary-General of the Cabinet, Obeid Mahal, visited Damascus in the last two days to resolve the debt issue outstanding since the occupation of Iraq. The Iraqi delegation met with the Syrian Finance Minister, Mohammed al-Hussein, and gave him a letter from his Iraqi counterpart, Baqir Jabr Zubaidi, on the willingness of the Iraqi government to settle all outstanding issues with the Syrian companies and traders and their debt to them on Iraq. The Iraqi government had invited last May all Syrian businessmen and traders who have debts on Iraq to submit their applications via the Business Chancellery in the Iraqi embassy in Damascus with evidence and documents to prove this, in a step to close this file. Sources in the Iraqi embassy in Damascus said that 350 companies had submitted applications; specialized committees were sent to study the applications and documents but much of the receivables alleged have been disbursed."
