The Ministry of Electricity has signed a contract with a Japanese company to complete the project of rehabilitating Al-Taji gaseous power station under the Japanese grant allocated for the ministry.

An official source at the ministry said in press statements that the contract was signed on behalf of the Ministry by engineer Abdul Wahab Kazim, director general of electricity production in the central region, and it includes replacing the (second, third and fifth) old units by new Japanese-made ones. He added that an Iraqi company will start implementing the project under the Japanese supervision, while a Jordanian company will responsible for the survey and assessment of the project. The source said that the cadres were able to operate the fifth unit at Al-Taji the power station; while work at Mosul gaseous power station was controlled through the remote surveillance system, which has been installed recently.

He explained that coordination between the Iraqi and Japanese sides is ongoing to complete the rehabilitation projects of the electrical system and add new units that will supply the electrical system with additional power. The Ministry of Electricity has prepared a plan for 2008 that include building a large number of generating units in Baghdad and other governorates to reach a production capacity of more than nine thousand five hundred megawatts at the end of this year.
