Iraq signed with Turkey and Iran, a tripartite memorandum of understanding to activate the Electric power grid project linked with the two countries to increase production of electric power in Iraq, in preparation for the eight-link project with Turkey and Iran as well as Europe and East and Central Asia.

The Minister of Electricity Karim Wahid stated on Thursday on the sidelines of the conference for energy ministers of neighboring countries, where the Syrian side was absent for technical reasons, stressing on the formation of a joint committee to follow-up the terms of the memorandum.

For his part, the Turkish Energy Minister Taner Yýldýz said his country intends to raise the capacity of the second electrical line with Iraq, he said:

"We are providing Iraq with 200 kW per hour, as well as extending another electric line with capacity up to 40 kW but not working at full capacity and we are trying to raise their capacity in the coming period."

On the quantity of water which was released by Ankara after the drop in the amount of water in the Euphrates River, which had a negative impact on the ability of producing electric power in Hadytha dam, the Turkish minister stressed on the launch of 563 cubic meters per second, while the Iranian Energy Minister Paroviz Fattah assured on the need for coordination to link the power grids in regular basis, he said:

" Iraq and Iran are linked with two electric lines of 400 kV, as well as a second line with capacity of 132 kV on the border with Iraq in the city of Khanaqin, and other lines in northern Iraq of 20 kV. We call for the harmony between the two countries’ networks for the absence of coordination in this area. "

It is noteworthy that the level of electric power production in Iraq has reached a seven-thousand megawatts, which is less than half of the actual needs to the country, which prompted the Government to the application of programmed shutoff in residential and industrial neighborhoods, at the time the Ministry of Electricity promised to raise the rate of electric power production to the self-sufficiency at the end of 2011, according to the statements of minister.
