For oil interest, the US congress supports Iraq division, says experts

In an interview, Sa’ad al-Muttalibi, a member of the State of Law Coalition from Baghdad, and Othman Ali, a professor at the Erbil University, discussed reports about a plan by the United States for dividing Iraq into three countries based on ethnic and religious differences.

Muttalibi says Washington has an interest in supporting the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), because it possesses parts of Iraq’s oil reserves through sharing in exploration of crude oil and allowing giant oil companies to operate in Kurdistan.

Referring to the relations between the KRG and the US administration, he maintains that the authorities of the Kurdistan region are cooperating with America and the Israeli regime, therefore, the US government leans towards the regional government.
He added that the US congress is moving towards a plan for diving Iraq, noting the Kurdish officials have good relations with the US congressional representatives and the Kurds are able to urge American legislators to pass many proposals in line with the interests of the Kurdistan region.
Ali, for his part, says the US’ strategic interest has always been the division of the Middle East through the traditional colonial policy of “divide and rule,” but the region cannot always attribute its shortcomings to the US’ colonial policies.
