Former environment minister of Iraq jailed for corruption charges

Former environment minister of Iraq has been ordered to be punished by two years’ imprisonment due to corruption charges against him. The judiciary has also fined him USD 280,000.
Sargon Lazar Slewa, a Christian who served in former PM Nuri al-Maliki's government, has been tried on charges ‘related to corruption’.
However, the statement from judiciary department denied adding details on Slewa's actions. Widespread public anger over corruption and poor services led to weeks of protests earlier this year, pushing Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to announce a series of reforms aimed at streamlining the government and combating graft.
But the endemic nature of corruption in Iraq and the fact that officials are limiting their own privileges by implementing some changes are major obstacles to reform.
It is assumed that more officials and former ministers are involved in various corruption charges in Iraq.
