Jeongshin Engineering & Construction Company & Archirodeon Construction Company was selected for the first phase of construction of Iraq’s new US $6 billion port. The general manager of the general company for ports of Iraq, Orman Rahdi Thani, announced that Archirodon have provided the highest technical evaluation of the 16 initial bids. Hyundai engineering, Habtoor Leighton Group & Dredging International will involve a giant breakwater & service pier.
In an interview of Orman Rahdi Thani in Iraq’s southern city of Basra, it was declared that a bid of 206 billion dinars have been offered by Jeongshin. It was also be declared by Thani that within two weeks the preferred bidder will be announced for the project.
Iraqi government will help Grand Faw (which is the first phase of the giant port) financially. The main objective of the establishment of Grand Faw Port is to make Iraq a gateway between Europe and the Middle East.
The Gulf State’s plans are under the reconstruction of the colonial-era railway which is linking Iraq with Turkey. It would be bypassing the Suez Canal. After the completion of the project Rahdi announced that it will cut the reaching time to Europe from 20 days to three or four.
Grand Faw had a 7000 meter quay for containerized trade and a 3500 metre dock for general cargo as their preliminary plans.
