Iraq urges Turkey and Syria to conclude new agreements on the join waters

The Iraqi President Jalal Talabani left to Turkey today to participate in the (Global Forum V) for Water in Istanbul at the head of a delegation from the Ministry of Water Resources.

The Minister of Water Resources Abdul Latif Rasheed, hoped that Iraqi delegation will conclude international conventions on joint water of Euphrates and Tigris rivers with an international aid to determine fair shares of water for the riparian states of Syria and Turkey as well as Iraq.

Rashid also stressed in a statement to the National Center for information on the necessity of activating the work of the Joint Technical Committee between these countries and exchanging the hydrological information, to serve the issue of water in these countries.

According to Rashid's statement, this forum is the most important global gathering and non-governmental for the concerned activities of water and in which thousands of politicians, officials, professionals, experts and businessmen meet to discuss the political, legal and technical aspects regarding the subject of water.

It is noteworthy that Iraq has suffered the past two years from the scarcity of water due to lack of rainfall in the past two seasons, as well as the control of Turkey and Syria in the amount of water reaching to Iraq from Tigris and Euphrates rivers through their territories as well as Iran's determination for the amount of water for some of the important tributaries of the Tigris River, which originate from there.
