The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities announced on Thursday that Iraq has received the first group of Western tourists since the fall of the former regime in 2003.

Reuters quoted to the ministry spokesman Abdul-Zahra al-Talqani as he confirmed that a group of five Britons, two Americans and one Canadian had arrived to Iraq on the 8th of this month in a trip to visit the monuments and historical sites including the hanging gardens of Babylon.

Al-Talqani added that the tour will take three-week organized by a British company, but he declined to disclose the name of the company, and he expressed his hope that the eight tourists will convey a positive message about the situation in Iraq to the citizens of their countries.

The tour in Iraq included visiting Erbil Castle which is a remnant of the Ottoman Empire, and the ancient Assyrian city of Nineveh, in addition to the shrines of imams in Samarra, Karbala and Najaf.
Tourists will finish their journey this week by visiting the National Museum of Iraq.
