The Oil Ministry’s spokesman stated on Sunday that Iraq will begin drilling to extract oil from a joint field with Kuwait, despite the absence of an agreement governing the investment in joint fields.

In the weeks preceded the Iraqi invasion to Kuwait in 1990, Iraq accused its southern neighbor of stealing oil worth tens of billion dollars from the fields by horizontal drilling, which was denied by Kuwait.

Assem Jihad, the Oil Ministry’s spokesman said that "The oil minister, visited the oil field in Safwan and launched the installation of several rigs scheduled to begin drilling within a few days."

Many fields are located on borders, including the South Rumaila "high magnitude" as well as the fields of Safwan and Zubayr.

The spokesman clarified that the oil minister, Hussain al-Shahristani said during a visit to the common border fields, on Saturday, that Iraq will dig more wells in the area until they reach to an agreement with Kuwait.

Al-Shahristani was quoted as saying, "We will start drilling more wells in the field of Safwan to achieve the maximum benefit from the availability of crude oil in order to increase the rates of production and exports."

Iraq did not enter into any agreement to determine the technical and legal mechanisms for investment in the oil fields between the two countries.
