The Singapore-based e-Sys Group plans to use Gitex 2004 in early October to firm up its IT distribution network for Iraq. This will include branded PCs which use Linux as the operating system.
Plans are to have multiple channel partners in the country which, despite the present problems, could emerge as one of the bigger regional markets for technology requirements over the medium term.
The announcement is expected to put e-Sys in a better position to tap a number of sizeable IT related tenders that could be put out by Iraqi ministries. According to market reports, the Ministry of Education is expected to announce its PC requirements soon.
e-Sys has been shipping IT hardware, essentially hard drives and memory devices, to Iraq. Average revenues from that market are at around $350,000, but they did dip in the last two months due to violence.
"Iraq will be a major focus market for e-Sys in the Middle East. We believe that a Linux-based PCs would provide a significant advantage in a price sensitive market such as Iraq," said Pavan Gupta, regional general manager of e-Sys Technology, based in Jebel Ali Free Zone.
For key IT components, e-Sys uses air express services to Iraq, while other hardware are sent by road or sea to a third country Jordan or Kuwait and then brought into Iraq.
The company made a splash in the UAE market early last year by pioneering the concept of the sub-Dh1,000 PC.
