The Iraqi minister of agriculture, Sawsan Ali Magid al-Sharifi, said that the ministry had signed contracts with several companies for the import of 11 modern multi-purpose agricultural airplanes, reported the Iraqi newspaper, Al-Furat on March 28, 2005.
Al-Sharifi added that these airplanes will be delivered in various dates, but the ministry tries to receive them as soon as possible, since the fighting campaign against palm insects in the provinces of Deyala, Baghdad, Waset, Babel, Karbala and Najaf should start soon. The ministry intends to send all the workers of the agricultural aviation department to training courses abroad to catch up with the scientific and technological progress in this area, added al-Sharifi.
The ministry announced also that it will receive two airplanes on April 10, and it will send Iraqi pilots to train on these airplanes in a Jordanian airport for a 5 day period. The ministry prepared the necessary landing areas and the needed vehicles for providing fuel to the airplanes.
