Japan will spend $100 million to build a power plant in the southern Iraqi city of Samawa where some 600 Japanese troops are deployed to provide humanitarian assistance, according to published reports.
The 60-megawatt thermal power plant, Japan's first major infrastructure project in Iraq, is scheduled to begin operations around mid next year, Kyodo News Agency said, citing government sources.
Of Iraq's 18 provinces, Muthana province, of which Samawa is the capital, is the only province that has no power plant, Kyodo said, adding Samawa has a 10-hour blackout every day. Source: Trade Arabia
