New oil minister of Iraq visited Baiji refinery
Iraqi Oil Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi visited, on Thursday, Baiji refinery in the province of Tikrit, in the first official visit to the oil refinery.
The oil minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi said in an interview on his visit to the refinery On Thursday, that "the Baiji refinery is fully secured by the Iraqi Forces" noting that "some of the attacks that occur from time to time on the refinery will be dealt with by the special forces in charge of the protection of refinery. "
Abdul-Mahdi said, "My visit to the refinery came to sensitize public opinion and to show that whole state apparatus and all Iraqi people are with Iraqi Forces" adding that "special forces responsible for protecting the refinery does not suffer from any shortage."
This is the first visit by a Ministry of Oil official to the Baiji refinery, which was seized by gunmen from ISIL, before the Iraqi Forces regain control completely.
Iraq has suffered from old oil facilities which often produces less than design capacity, and Baiji refinery which was built in the seventies of the last century is considered one of the biggest Iraqi refineries, which produces 300 000 barrels of oil derivatives.
